2001 A Space Odyssey Review

The film 2001 A space Odyssey is both a film and a novel, the author of the novel was Arthur C. Clarke and director and producer of the film was Stanley Kubrick. Both were released in 1968 and both tell a story of how life could be in the year 2001 and it is filmed in a documentary like style. It begins with the early life of man when we first discover tools, and then from then it jumps to the year 2001 to show how far man has come since that moment. It gives the view of 2001 as a technological wonderland where computers have their own minds and do not need human interference. Watching this film today one could realize that some of the predictions this film had in 1968 actually do exist, for example the videophone call is today called “Skype”.
While I watched this film there were some things that I liked and some things I didn’t as with any film, but as a telecommunications major the things I didn’t like made this film a bust for me. One thing this film is famous for is its lack of dialogue, true this makes the journey through space much more realistic, because there is no sound in space, but for me dialogue is a huge part of any film. Although the dialogue that was used in the film was well placed and well written the scenes without it seemed very long and drawn out, for example the scene where the character Dave goes to investigate on of the satellites, all you can hear is his breathing. Some of the scenes that had no dialogue had in its stead a powerful score; this is majority of the film, but it’s not a good substitute for my taste.
One of the things I did enjoy about the film was its creative use of props and use of green screen. The only thing that gives away the fact that this film was made in 1968 is the look of the characters and the look of some of the set. I believe that this was a huge thing for this film to achieve and is what probably led to development of the way the film Star Wars was shot when ever something was supposed to in space, because you actually felt as if you were watching an Astronaut documentary instead of a scripted film and if you can do this then you’ve made a great film as far as camera work and editing is concerned. But something else that bothered me about this film was its constant jumping around in the story. It leads you to believe the film will be following one character and then that person just completely disappears from the story.
This was a constant headache to me primarily because I was taught to always explain what happens to the character where as this film just goes on without an explanation, then again the lack of dialogue becomes an issue. Another problem with this constant jumping around is that there are scenes that make absolutely no since to the viewer, and also it almost never explains the significance of certain things, this a reference to the black object that appears three times in the film for no apparent reason, and even towards the end of the film when it appears its about to explained it isn’t. I believe this is one of the many reasons that a lot of people who have seen 2001 A Space Odyssey say that they do not get what’s going on and are left with a sense of confusion.
Over all this was a good movie even with its faults, because of its creativity. But because of the direction the creators decided to go in its simply not a movie for me. I’m not bashing or praising, these are just some of the things that I observed while watching. In a final note I would like to add that knowing who the director of this film should lead any watcher to anticipate this style of movie and if you were watch any of Stanley Kubrick’s other films you might not feel the same. But I will let you decide how you feel about this film.

A new moonwalker

Today we finished our group project by presenting it to the class. From the comments that I read I believe that our class enjoyed our website and video. I had fun doing this the only thing that was a problem for me was getting help editing it together on a program I've never used. But over all I have no complaints.

Group update #2

We have decided to definitely go with the dancing idea. I'm going to be doing the dancing but at the end we will all say something on the video. I think this i s going to be good.

Group progress #1

Our group has decided on a how to dance video. Being that I am a t-comm major I've been given the task of shooting and editing, also I will be the one dancing. I will see if I can rent a camera for this but if not my group mates have digital cameras that we can use but I will still be editing the video.

My own worst enemy

When assesing my own work I tend to look at punctuation because I have tendency to over look it while reading. Also I look at how long it is what the spacing is other things like that. Considering that when I write I'm free writing there is much more chance of me having errors. But even with my writing the way it is I make sure to give my reasons for writing and I also make sure that my transitions are clear. That's how assess myself.

I'm a brilliant strategist

This section basically tells us that we need to pay attention to what we are reading. It states thats its okay to skim over things just to get a basic over view but if you really want to a good basis of what is going on you have to go over the reading carefully or as carefully as you can. It is also a good idea to take notes over what you've read or just jot things down while reading and a thing that I like to do is to look up words that I don't know so that I maty incorporate them into my own vocabulary. That's a basic over vew of reading strategies.

Analyze this ( I don't own this statement don't sue)

While analyzing a text its important to look for the meaning behind the words, the best example I can give for this is analyzing Shakespeare dialogue. There is always something behind what one of his characters has to say, but it may the most simplest thing put into many words. Also you must state what you are analyzing for the reader to know what you are talking about. That's my view on analyzing text.

Edit your Proof

When I write my paragraphs I always make sure that I proof read while going through it instead of the end so as to not to have to do so at the end. The first sentence is always a hard thing to write because its the eye catcher, and the ending is even worst. But I always try to keep it simple with my word choise as to keep the readers attention without them having to look up words. That's my strategy for editing my paragraphs.

I don't wanna be right just let me write

When ever I write something I sometimes never look at what I'm actually typing I just look at the keyboard and the words just go to the screen, I believe that if you worry too much about being correct in every single aspect of what you write down it takes away from your creativity, even though its good to look over what you've written after you've finished, nobody said that was a bad thing.

Now thats a literal narrative

After reading Malcom X's portion of the reading I've determined that the most significant thing that you would find id that a man who been a criminal and had no real focus in life found that reading and writing gave him a peace that performing criminal acts could never give.

That was rhetorical.

When ever I write something its my purpose to show them the funny side of situations where as most try to just show the serious side. Also I believe my audience is whomever wants to read what I put down it doesn't matter to me. The strategy that I use is short and to the point that's the best way to do it, especially on the web. Was this a good blog ? That was rhetorical.

Too Much Noise !

Last night I was sitting in my room when I heard someone scream, " Shut the f@#k up !". I didn't hear anyone making noise so I went to see what was going on, so I walked one door down from my dorm and found about 10 people huddled around a lap top looking at a video of Lady Gaga, trying to see if she had a male appendage. Without me knowing the only R.A. that I know would actually make a report instead of just asking people to keep it down had walked up and was standing in the door way. When we all turned around he asked," What time do the quiet hours start ?", with an extremely annoyed look on his face. The guy who was sitting at the lap top said," Uuuummm," and then the R.A. proceeded to take our names and room numbers, but what made this all even more hilarious was the fact that two guy's walked by at just the wrong time and said right behind the R.A.," Lady Gaga has a D!(k !?" But here's the kicker majority of the people that got their names written down had only been in the room for about thirty seconds, hilarious.

Nothing like the first time

This is my first time blogging, personally I'm not a real fan of blogs, but a grade is a grade. This class starts at 8:00 a.m., and I can't help but ask why I made it this early when I chose my classes, just kidding. But this is something new, I've never had to keep an electronic journal for anything.
